Emergency Management

Important NOTICE to Eddystone RESIDENTS

From: Office of Emergency Management

In 1988 Eddystone Emergency Management, with the support of local industry, installed an Emergency Notification System.  The system consists of two diaphone air horns located at 2nd and Saville Ave. and the other at 12th & Saville Ave.  In the event of any emergency which threatens the safety of   residents,  such as a hazardous material spill or fire, tornado, flash flood, etc. the system will be activated.  Upon hearing the horns sounding, immediately go indoors, close all doors and windows, and tune your radio to KYW  news radio 1060 AM.   You will be advised of the nature of the emergency and what action you should take via KYW.  Please DO NOT call the fire or police departments unless you have an emergency and need assistance.  In the event of an evacuation, the horns will be activated again and you will be told over KYW radio that an evacuation order has been given and the route to take and where to go.  DO NOT call on the phone for instructions. If an evacuation is ordered, extra firefighters and police will be called in to assist handicapped residents in the evacuation.  The fire department maintains a list of physically impaired persons who would require assistance during an evacuation. If you or someone you know would require assistance please call the fire department at 874 5800 with the name, address, and type of assistance required.

Since this system has been in place we have had one false alarm due to an equipment malfunction, while at the same time, KYW radio was hit by lightening and knocked off the air.  KYW was unable to broadcast an all clear to residents for approximately 15 minutes.

We hope we never have to use this system but it is the only way we can immediately notify a majority of the residents of an emergency and also keep them informed as to what is taking place and what action they should take.

Thank You

Ralph Orr,  Mayor

Robert Gliem,  Emergency Management Coordinator
